"Anderson Ranch Legacy: Mentoring Artistic Excellence", Kansas City Convention Center Room 1501C, Level 1

Anderson Ranch Arts Center has a long history of enriching lives with art, inspiration and community. The Ranch began as an artist-run collaborative in 1966, when artists such as Paul Soldner came to create work and teach. This exhibit brings together Anderson Ranch faculty, residents and students to celebrate 50 years of mentorship and the positive impact the Ranch experience has had – and continues to have – on the artistic development of its students and residents.

“701 Louisiana”, Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence, KS

All of the artists invited to this exhibition have stayed with Bird and Michel Loomis while in town as demonstrators for the Lawrence Arts Center’s Ceramics Symposium. At some point each invited artist has enjoyed a spirited conversation and cup of coffee while perched around the Loomis’ kitchen island. Bonds and unexpected connections arise from the warmth and energy in the Loomis’ Victorian home filled with contemporary art.

The common thread in a sense is that “we were here”.
This exhibition is a ledger, a record, and a signal of paths that have crossed ~despite any separation of time or distance.

The Lawrence Arts Center will be presenting this exhibition at the Cider Gallery, which is a beautiful exhibition space a few blocks from the Arts Center.

Traces of shared DNA are found in the work of all ceramic artists and form the foundation of an ever-changing legacy of evolution and revolution. Ceramic genealogy continues to mutate and transform with each generation of promising new talent as the influence of makers and mentors continues to alter, shift, and evolve into the new, unexpected aesthetics of today. The exhibition, The Once and Future: New Now reflects the arc of that experience from the early pioneers to their heirs. Ceramics has been defined by the relationship between makers and mentors as the emphasis on community continues to thrive. Scheduled to coincide with a national ceramic conference, NCECA, the New Now exhibition is a concise display of the gallery’s dedication to representing ceramic artists for the past 30 years. Exhibiting the work of ceramic masters alongside newcomers to the field, The Once and Future: New Now embraces the theme of NCECA’s 50th anniversary conference: Makers, Mentors, and Milestones.
